What to Expect on Your First Visit
Trimming the Tooth
- In order to properly attach the porcelain veneer to your tooth, a small part of enamel must be trimmed. This will enable the veneer to fit comfortably inside your mouth and create an even, natural appearance. The amount of enamel removed is usually between .5 to .7 millimeters. Depending on your situation, your dentist will decide if a local anesthetic needs to be applied prior to the trimming process.
Taking an Impression of the Tooth
- To ensure an accurate fit, the porcelain veneer must be formed to match the new trimmed shape of your tooth. To do so, your dentist will take an impression of your tooth by creating a mold of it using impression putty.
- For a natural look, the porcelain must be the same shade as your natural tooth. Therefore, during this process your dentist will also take note of the current shade of your tooth, so the veneer can be fabricated to match.
What to Expect on Your Second Visit
Evaluation of Veneer
- Prior to bonding the veneer onto your tooth, the dentist will evaluate the veneer to make sure that it is the proper shape and size. To do this, they will place the veneer over your tooth and compare the dimensions. If any trimming is required, the dentist will remove the veneer and trim it until it is the correct fit.
- Although the color of porcelain was selected during the impression phase, the actual color may slightly differ when applied to your actual tooth. Fortunately, the veneer is translucent and therefore the dentist can alter the color of the bonding cement to obtain a closer match.
- After the color of cement has been chosen, your dentist will apply a temporary paste with the same color, into the veneer. This process may seem lengthy, but it is crucial. Once the veneer is attached to the tooth it becomes permanent and should not be removed, unless completely necessary. Therefore, the time required to find and make the perfect fit is well worth it.
Bonding the Veneer onto the Tooth
- Now that the veneer is the correct size and the color matches the surrounding teeth, it is ready to be bonded to your tooth. To prepare for this, the veneer and your tooth will both be cleaned.
- To ensure that the veneer bonds securely to your tooth, the enamel will first be etched using an acid etching gel. The roughness caused by this process will allow the cement to snugly bond to your tooth.
- Next the cement will be applied onto the veneer and the dentist will position it onto your tooth. When it is positioned correctly, the dentist will use a specially designed light which shines through the veneer and into the cement. The light will cause the cement to cure within moments.
- Once the porcelain veneer has been securely bonded to your tooth there may be excess cement on the edges which your dentist will trim off. At this point the dentist will also examine the veneer to ensure it's proper fit and will trim and correct the shape if needed.
Porcelain veneers will last 7-20 years, as they may get chipped or come off over time. Also, as you age the tooth and surrounding gum tissue will change and therefore the veneers may have to be replaced or altered.
